Confined Spaces >

The existing City & Guild 5831 Confined Space format will no longer be available. It is being replaced by City & Guild 6150 which complies more formally with National Occupational Standards (NOS). One of the effects of these standards is that each award has a specific content and is set against a specified training & assessment period.

All the new formats are complimentary to the Confined Space Regulations 1997 and for the Water Industry in compliance with Water/ UK National NC 1 to NC 4 classification of confined space guidelines.

WATER UK Classification of Entries - Definitions

The new City & Guild Qualification are set out as below :

6150-01 Low Risk Confined Spaces
6150-02 Medium Risk Confined Spaces
6150-03 High Risk Confined Spaces
6150-04 Overseeing Work in Confined Spaces
6150-05 Emergency Rescue Team

The determination of “Risk Level” will be the responsibility of both the client (ie owner of the Confined Space) and the prospective contractor submitting a method statement for undertaking the work. Hence each individual company will have to plan ahead as to the highest risk level and national confined space classification they would be prepared to tender for, and have sufficient personnel qualified to undertake this work.

One of the biggest changes to effect the work on site is that for all NC2 – NC4 Medium & High Risk Confined Spaces a qualified 6150-04 “Overseer” is required on site, to supervise confined space working.

Be aware that the status and responsibilities of the “Overseer” is well above that formally required under the previous C&G 5831- Unit 825 (Top Man) standard. The “Overseer” is now expected to undertake risk assessments, read plans and control safe working on site

The training and assessment of the Entry Operatives 6150-03 with the Overseer qualification 6150-04 have been combined, and whilst all will be trained to include the duties of the “overseer” only a selected few will be capable of attaining the Overseer standard.

It should be remembered that even those Companies restricting themselves to Medium Risk only will require a qualified “Overseer” on site.
